5 Things to Know in Troy This Week (12/10/18)

It’s getting chillier in the city, and holiday events seem to be happening on right on top of the other. With loads of entertainment in New York’s Capital Region, there’s sure to be something that suits your holiday needs. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is headed into their last week of classes for the semester (to be topped off with exams next week!) and the food in Troy is enough to keep even the hungriest college student fed.

Come to Holiday Happiness

This Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Houston Field House, you can see one of the most graceful ice shows around. “A Royal Holiday” has not only solo performances, but nationally-recognized guest skaters and even opportunities for those learning to skate! There will be concessions available and raffle baskets to win, as well as loads of holiday cheer! Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Reward Offered in Malnourished Dog Case

Officers found an abandoned and malnourished dog in Troy last week while on patrol near the Frear Park basketball courts. They’re currently investigating the case and the dog (who has a good prognosis) is being treated by a veterinarian. Kingston’s New York State Human Association is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Grab a Slice at DeFazio’s

DeFazio’s has been serving Troy authentic wood-fired pizza since 1991. They’re the only ones that will deliver it straight to your door—or stop on by and enjoy a slice at their restaurant! Their pizzas are cooked in an authentic Italian wood-fired oven, and they have a variety of different doughs from traditional white to garlic and herb, gluten free to spicy red pepper. DeFazio’s even makes a homemade sausage crumble. And if you’re not in the mood for pizza (for whatever reason), they also serve pasta, antipasto, and calzone options.

City Council Hesitates on Sanctuary City Vote

The Troy City Council tabled the decision to make the community a Sanctuary City in an attempt to “fine tune the language of the measure.” The resolution, which indicates that police officers can’t ask about the immigration statues of an individual receiving government services, moved forward quickly over the last few weeks while the police leadership expressed private concerns. Many of the speakers at the meeting supported the resolution; however, Mayor Patrick Madden and other council members agreed to postpone it in order to review it before going to vote.

See “Cherish the Ladies”

On December 18 at 7:30 p.m., come celebrate Christmas with one of the most engaging, timeless ensembles. Cherish the Ladies has been sharing Irish traditions with their audiences for over 30 years. Although they incorporate their signature style into beloved carols (like “Silent Night”), they shine in their arrangements that highlight the unique Celtic instrumentation, harmonies, and step dancing talents. Come join them in Troy for a Celtic Christmas!
