Consisting of over 350 acres, the Hudson Highlands Gateway Park was purchased in May 2000, by the Scenic Hudson Land Trust, the Town of Cortlandt and Westchester County. In order to preserve the natural environment and prevent the area from dense residential development, a group of concerned citizens formed the Hudson Highlands Gateway Task Force. For over half a decade, the Task Force has been working on issues regarding park improvements and assessing the park's natural resources.
Located at the southern end of the picturesque Hudson Highlands, the park has great history. With an entrance off Sprout Brook Road and a handicap accessible entrance at the end of Doris Lee Drive, the Hudson Highlands Gateway Park is ideal for an afternoon or all day outing. This natural park offers residents a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, birding, cross-country skiing, fishing and snowshoeing. A vast network of trails covers 4.9 miles of the property. The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference joined the Task Force to help in the construction and maintenance of trails. In order to insure the safety of those visiting the park, the use of motorized vehicles, firearms, mountain bikes, metal detectors and radios are prohibited. Open year-round from dawn till dusk, the Hudson Highland Gateway Park provides all with an enjoyable way to appreciate the natural environment.
