A quick history Lesson!
Sometime around the year 1010, Icelandic explorer Thorfinn Karlsefni set sail for North America in search of Leif Eriksson's fabled Vinland. The exact location of this land of tall grass and wild grapes is still unknown.
According to the Vinland Sagas, Karlsefni’s crew sailed down the Atlantic coast, then up a “Streamfjord” to its head of navigation. There, these hardy Vikings made camp and Karlsefni’s wife bore a son they named Snorri. Some scholars (like you might find on The History Channel) believe this “fjord” to be The Hudson River, and their camp to have been somewhere in the vicinity of modern-day Troy.
During a harsh winter with little to eat, our vikings killed and ate a strange whale that made them all sick. In spring, they departed for more southern reaches.
Finally, after three years in the New World, they returned to Iceland to tell their tale. And coincidently enough, when we traced the family lineage Franklin Alley Social Club’s very own Frank Guðmundur Sicari we found he was a direct descendant of Thorfinn Karlsefni...WHAT?!?!?!
And so that is why, on Friday March 1, 2019, Franklin Alley Social Club will celebrate the coming spring just as our local Vikings would have, with a great party, and lots and lots of Hudson River Selkies (Norse Merpeople).
